The aim of the RSC is to keep modern audiences in touch with Shakespeare as our contemporary....That means that as well as the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, our repertoire includes classic plays by international dramatists and work by living writers. Built 1932 by Elisabeth Scott as "Shakespeare Memorial Theatre", incorporating the relics of the previous "Shakespeare Memorial Theatre" (built 1879, destroyed by a fire in 1926) as rehearsal and conference rooms. Named in honour of the Stratford-born English playwright, poet, and actor, William Shakespeare (ca.1564-1616). 1936-1991 continuous alterations. 1960 renamed "Royal Shakespeare Theatre". One of the homes of the "Royal Shakespeare Company". 1412 seats. 1986 conversion of the conference wing by Michael Reardon, re-opened as "Swan Theatre" (432 seats) and "Ashcroft Room". Shakespeare's Birthplace www.shakespeare.org.uk
Possibly the most famous and most visited literary landmark in Britain. This is the house where it is thought that Shakespeare was born and spent his formative years. The house originally belonged to William Shakespeare's father John, who became a successful Stratford businessman. John & Mary Shakespeare moved from nearby Snitterfield to Stratford in 1529, shortly after getting married. It is known from Stratford records that the Shakespeare family were residing in Henley street by 1552 and that William Shakespeare was born in 1564. It is assumed from this collection of dates that this building in Henley Street was William Shakespeare's Birthplace. The Birthplace remained in the hands of Shakespeare's descendants until the 19th century, after which it had a somewhat chequered past....The Shakespeare Birthday Committee obtained the Henley Street house in 1847, with the financial and moral support of the public. An extensive project of restoration then took place to restore the house to it's former glory. The Birthplace was originally made of local materials; with oak timber from the nearby Arden Forest and blue stone from Wilmcote.* Much of the original stone, oak beams and fireplaces are still in place and care has been taken to furnish the house with contemporary Elizabethan furniture. Anne Hathaway's Cottage
Exquisitely picturesque - the second favourite Shakespearian property. Before marrying William Shakespeare in 1582, Anne Hathaway lived in what is justifiably described as one of England's most famous buildings. Part of the building dates from the mid-fifteenth century, and some of the furniture belonged to the Hathaways and their descendants. The garden is outstanding.This property currently has no designated parking spaces or concessionary parking fares for Orange Badge holders. The parking fare is 3Op. This property is approached via a stone flagged path, which surrounds the house and its gardens. There is ample seating outside, and the gardens have mainly flat access, although one section is accessed via steps. Steps lead to the Ladies and Gents toilet facilities, situated at the front of the garden. The fully accessible toilet facilities are reached via the lawn area, adjacent to the upper coach park.... |
